From January 30 to February 6, 2025, the monastery held the Chan-7 Spring Retreat for the Public and respectfully invited Venerable Abbot Jianying to serve as the retreat-presiding master.
Nearly 900 participants from Taiwan, the United States, Australia, Italy, Hong Kong, and Japan, including students from various levels of meditation classes at the affiliated centers worldwide, embraced this rare and precious opportunity to return to Chung Tai for an intensive meditation practice. Among the participants were several Catholic monks and nuns from Italy, who joined the retreat to personally experience the profound joy of Chan meditation practice.
During the Chan-7 retreat, the retreat-presiding master gave teachings on the key principles of meditation and Chan inquiry, guiding participants toward the direct realization of their intrinsic nature.
Each day, participants diligently followed the ten-session schedule, engaging in sitting meditation, walking meditation, morning and evening services, and the formal meals. Through balancing motion and stillness, they cultivated self-reflection, mindfulness, and deepened their mastery of the mind.
After completing the seven-day retreat, participants departed with a heart full of Dharma joy. The clarity of mind realized during the retreat became a guiding light, inspiring them to uphold and apply their practice in daily life, bringing greater wisdom, clarity, and faith to their path.
During the Chan-7 retreat, nearly 900 participants from around the world gathered at Chung Tai Chan Monastery to calm, purify, and awaken the mind through meditation practice.
Throughout the Chan-7 retreat, practitioners learned to master the mind in both motion and stillness through seating and walking meditation.
Morning bells and evening drums echo deep and far,
White plum and red cherry blossoms warm the spring's chill.
Arising and ceasing, conditioned things are empty in nature,
Beyond motion and stillness, the mind naturally rests in peace.
Abide firmly in right mindfulness, the fragrance of samadhi and wisdom permeates,
Follow the nature of awareness, everything unfolds just as it is.
Say not that all in samsara are enfettered,
When effortless freedom blooms, its scent fills the garden.
Good cultivators, for this Chan-Seven Initiation, how does the last verse go?
Each day, use the mind of no-mind to transcend all appearances,
Wherever our nature remains pure, home is everywhere we go.
Begin—
In the Buddha Selection Hall, our practice is complete;
Learning the unconditioned, we awaken the mind's true source.
Within it, emptiness and existence encompass infinite subtlety;
Applying it in the present moment, no mystery is to be found—
A lifted brow, a sudden glance, a full embodiment of miraculous power,
Manifesting with conditions, like the moon's reflections on water.
Within the Chan gate of mind-Dharma, reveals a bodhisattva vow,
Freeing oneself and others from the depths of delusion.
Good cultivators, for the completion of this Chan-Seven, how does the last verse go?
Originally complete without a hair's breadth of increase or decrease,
Timely manifest in the world in accordance with conditions.
Done—
